I’ve seen some great examples online of people who are converting their inground pools into natural pools. We’ve considered going chlorine free before. With the recent hurricane we got, there are no pool service techs available. Was just wondering how difficult it is to convert a regular pool into a natural pool?

Jana, you bring up an interesting question. Yes, it’s definitely possible to convert a regular inground pool into an NSP (natural swimming pool). However, the costs for building a natural swimming pool will far outweigh any savings you would see on your chemical maintenance . While a natural pool will save you money on chemicals it will certainly cost tens of thousands of dollars to convert it. With that said, a natural pool will definitely save you on weekly chemical maintenance costs, that’s how natural pools work. They use plants to passively filtrate the pool. However, when converting there are definitely some pros & cons to a natural pool. You have some other things to contend with such as water clarity and unwanted wildelife. I see from another thread that you’re located in Louisiana. Depending on where you live you may attract frogs, snakes, even gators with a natural pool. The water clarity in an NSP isn’t quite the same in a natural pool and those critters may be tougher to see. It’s something to consider Jana.
Thanks again Marcus. We have a small inground pool already and I was reading in one of the links in your comments that if you are going to do a natural pool that you really need 2 pools, one for the plants and another to swim in, is that correct?
That is correct Jana. One pool is a regeneration zone for plants and another is for swimming. A natural pool will use a combination of the two in any NSP application which is why they typically cost much more than an ordinary pool. It’s not necessarily something that is usually done but I’ve seen more and more people trying it out. If you do wind up converting to a natural pool, do us a favor and post some photos here and update us. We’d love to see how it comes out if you pull the trigger and do one.
