How do I keep my pool clean without any electricty?

I live in Louisiana and all the power is out, maybe for weeks. How do I keep my pool clean without any electricity to power my pool equipment?

If you don’t have access to electricity when cleaning your pool after the hurricane, remove as much debris as possible and superchlorinate the water. I’d recommend either using Di-Chlor Shock or liquid chlorine. Try and raise the Free Available Chlorine (FAC) level to at least 5-10 ppm. Maintain this FAC level should help you avoid algae growth and keep mosquito larvae from developing. Contact a pool service tech once the power is restored to come out and service the pool.

Should the pumps, filter unit, and heater/cooler be drained?

Chip, that’s not necessary. Run your circulation and filtration system continuously once you get power restored. This will help clean and clear pool after a hurricane. You’ll want to vacuum and brush your pool, then run your pool equipment until the water is completely clear. This may take a several days and some chemical treatment to bring it back to normal. If you expect your pool to be out of service for quite a while, you’ll want to go through a standard winterization process and that would involve draining the equipment.

I tried to get a pool guy out to clean our inground swimming pool and it’s hopeless. We have power but nobody else does. It’s going to be a few weeks til I get get our pool serviced but these tips are very helpful. Thanks Marcus.
